Media Release: Provincial Disaster Management Centre Activated in Western Cape

Mr Anton Bredell, Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning today confirmed that the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) will be activating the Joint Operations Centre (JOC) tomorrow, 8 January 2013 with regard to the pending strike action in the province.

 
The Western Cape Provincial Disaster Management Centre based in Tygerberg are on alert since this Monday, 7 January 2013 in anticipation of the strike action by farm workers purportedly to start on Wednesday in the province. The intention to proceed with strike action was communicated via media coverage and a mass meeting attended by approximately 850 farm workers in De Doorns on Sunday.
 
Additionally, further information received indicates that rural areas are again targeted. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre will be monitoring these areas diligently, with the partnership of SAPS and District Disaster Management Centres across the Western Cape.
 
All necessary government departments and stakeholders such as the emergency services and other response agencies have been placed on high alert in preparation for the strike action. Contingency plans have been established for various potential threats, however, the Chief Director, Colin Deiner remains positive that any possible disruptions will be managed smoothly and according to the necessary disaster management preparedness plans already established.
 
The Western Cape Provincial Government is committed to the safety and security of the provinces citizens, holiday makers and tourists that are still enjoying their stay in the Western Cape.
