Suspension of the Importation of Cloven-Hoofed Animals and Products from Brazil

12 October 2005
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has published an Alert message regarding a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in the FMD-free area of Mato Groso do Sul in Brazil.

Consequently, the importation of cloven-hoofed animals & products from all the States (Provinces) of Brazil has been suspended by the Senior Manager: Animal Health in terms of the Animal Diseases Act (Act 35 of 1984).

The situation will be re-evaluated as more information becomes available.

Products that have been treated according to Appendix 3.6.2 of the OIE: Inactivation Procedures for FMD are excluded from the ban.

En route consignments will be detained until further information is obtained from the Brazilian veterinary administration.

No new veterinary import permits will be issued for any of the affected products. All unused permits will be cancelled.
