Recent heavy seasonal winter rains from 10 July 2024 to 17 July 2024 have caused significant disruptions to water supplies across various communities in the Western Cape Province. One of the hardest-hit areas is the Goedverwacht Local Community near Piketberg.
The community, home to approximately 3,000 residents in 650 houses, faced severe damage to their water supply infrastructure. In response, the Department of Local Government's civil engineering team quickly collaborated with Bergriver Municipality's staff to restore water supply and secure funding for repairs. Key actions include:
Immediate Intervention: On-site repair of the water intake structure, cleaning sedimentation material, and repairing reno-mattresses in the raw water stilling basin.
New Infrastructure: Blasting out the damaged asbestos gravity main and installing a parallel 160 mm ND HDPE gravity main to ensure a reliable backup. Emergency Funding: Securing R750,000.00 for urgent repairs to the Goedverwacht water supply system.
Integration management meetings and technical discussions were held with Bergriver Local Municipality and West Coast District Municipality, resulting in a proactive flood damage restoration plan. The DLG and BLM will closely monitor the repair work to ensure the community's water supply is swiftly restored and future-proofed.
Stay tuned for updates on this critical repair work and the continued efforts to support our communities. #Goedverwacht #WaterCrisis #DLG #BergriverMunicipality #CommunitySupport #WesternCape.
