Stats SA report on municipal basic service delivery welcomed

1 April 2021

Municipalities in the Western Cape continue to deliver the highest levels of free basic services in the country.

Statistics South Africa’s latest Non-Financial Census of Municipalities (NFCM) report has been released and shows that Western Cape municipalities outperform the rest of the country on every level of free basic service delivery.

Anton Bredell, the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, says the survey speaks directly to the services rendered by municipalities to the poorest of the poor.

“It is reassuring to see that the Western Cape delivers the most units of free basic electricity, free basic water and free basic sewerage and sanitation services in the country.”

The survey tracks all 257 municipalities in the country, including the thirty municipalities in the Western Cape.

In terms of free basic water provided, 43.5% of consumer units recorded receiving water services, received free basic water services. In terms of free basic electricity provided, 27% of consumer units recorded receiving electricity services, received free basic electricity services and in terms of free basic sewerage and sanitation provided, 47.9% of consumer units receiving these services in the Western Cape, received free basic sewerage and sanitation services from their municipalities.

“In the Western Cape we are working hard to deliver better services and more opportunities for people in the province. We are glad this hard work is being reflected in the latest Stats SA report,” said Bredell.

Bredell congratulated the municipal mayors, their municipal managers and their teams for the hard work being done on the ground.

“This is only possible if you have people in place who are committed and dedicated to driving real change for their communities. I want to thank them and urge them to continue with the good work.”
