Two structures lost in De Hoop fires

15 September 2015

Two structures on the De Hoop Nature Reserve have been lost following fires which started due to lightning strikes in the nature reserve on Monday.

Cupidoskraal, which forms part of the multi-day Whale Trail hike, was burnt down as well as the Lekkerwater cottage – formerly a holiday residence for former state presidents.

All hikers were safely evacuated from the trail on Monday afternoon following lightning strikes which caused the fires. There have been no injuries.

A combination of inaccessible terrain and high winds made it difficult for firefighters to work overnight. Ground crews from CapeNature, Overberg District Municipality and Working on Fire are continuing to fight the fire today (Tuesday).

Currently, the Potberg side of the nature reserve is closed to the public. The De Hoop Collection Properties in the reserve have been unaffected and remains open to the public.

Additionally, firefighters are also currently battling to control a number of other fires spread across the Western Cape.

Fires currently burning:
•    De Hoop Nature Reserve (3)
•    Cederberg Wilderness Area (2)
•    Outeniqua Nature Reserve (7)
•    Riviersonderend Mountain Catchment Area (3)
