Western Cape fuel supply update

16 July 2021

There is currently no concerns related to fuel availability in the Western Cape.

The Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, says the Western Cape Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) consulted industry role players and other stakeholders on the fuel situation this morning.

“To repeat: the Western Cape currently does not have a fuel supply concern as there is sufficient fuel available in the province. We have further been advised that shortcomings of fuel in KwaZulu-Natal will not be supplied from the Western Cape but rather be addressed by stepping up imports in those regions.”

Bredell says an LPG shortage in the province was due to strong sea conditions and bad weather in Saldanha last week and over the weekend which prevented LPG vessels from docking and transferring product.

“This depleted the stocks at the onshore gas storing facility. However, vessels have been able to dock again since Tuesday and stocks have been replenished. Weather permitting this will no longer be a problem.”

The PDMC was informed that Industry role players have lodged an urgent appeal regarding the recent regulation banning the sale of fuel in portable containers.

The Western Cape government will support this appeal.
