Statement Regarding Baboons

12 May 2011

Media Statement by Minister of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning

As the Provincial Minister responsible for the oversight portfolio managing these issues raised, I take due note of the action taken by the group whose petition was handed to me today. The issues are all encompassing and cover a range of concerns and I welcome the public to engage with government on their environmental concerns.

My Department will, together with the management of CapeNature, commit time to review the content of the document and provide the stakeholders with clarity in terms of the concerns raised. This is an opportunity to better understand the concerns of this group and possibly the concerns of many other citizens who are not able to join us.

It is also an opportunity, I believe, to share information with the public on exactly how decisions are concluded within the respective legislative prescripts. CapeNature has in the meantime addressed some of the issues that have been raised and I have pleasure in attaching a memorandum covering our response to a number of these issues.
