The hospital was opened on 28 January 1938 and has since become a world-renowned institution, offering excellence in healthcare, teaching and research. The hospital is one of two central hospitals serving the population of the Western Cape and beyond. As a central hospital within the Department of Health in the Western Cape, our services include specialised and sub-specialised care with referrals from a network of secondary and primary care facilities.

The integration and functioning of these activities across the platform, enables the provision of the best healthcare possible for the people of the Western Cape.

In the past 75 years, Groote Schuur Hospital has served more than 3 million inpatients and almost 40 million outpatient visits. While our fame can be attributed to the world’s first heart transplant in December 1967, much more has been achieved in terms of cutting edge medical care and technological advancement.
