On Thursday 03 December 2009, the Department of Health's Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre (WCRC) for persons with physical disabilities, celebrated International Day for People with Disabilities. The theme for the day was "Realizing the Millennium Development Goals for all: Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities around the world".
In line with the theme, the programme was aimed at raising awareness and educating clients and other role players about the challenges faced by disabled people daily. The annual observance of this day promoted and mobilised support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with physical disabilities.
Guests were entertained with wheelchair dancing, and several past and present patients gave motivational talks and shared knowledge and experiences to inspire and encourage disabled people, as well as their families and the wider community. The day concluded with exhibitions from various organisations involved in disability.
The WCRC, situated on the grounds of Lentegeur Hospital, is a rehabilitation facility for people that have suffered physical disabilities, due to accidents, strokes, amputations etc. Staff at the facility is committed to deliver efficient and effective services to improve the lives of people with physical disabilities.
