188* babies born in Western Cape on Christmas day in public health facilities.

26 December 2022

We are happy to announce the birth of 188 babies* as reported by public health facilities throughout the Western Cape on Christmas Day 2022.

The total number reported from 0:00 on 25 December 2022, comprises of 122 boys and 66 girls.

The first, a baby girl was born at 00:00 at Groote Schuur Hospital, weighing 3,130 kg, to mother Stella Masunda. Just one minute later, at 00:01, our second Christmas baby, also a girl weighing 3,2 kg, was born to mother Miché Prins, at Groote Schuur Hospital.

Two sets of twins also made their arrival with the first set of twins, two girls, were born at 16:30 at Tygerberg Hospital to mother Elvina Amos.

We congratulate all new parents on the birth of their babies on this special day. Our message to all new parents is that of the importance of the first 1000 days of a child’s life (since inception to two years old). Provide your baby with a safe environment and good nutrition. Make sure their immunisations are up to date and that you play an active role in their development by talking to them, playing with them, and supporting them to reach their milestones. The Department of Health looks forward to joining you on this journey.
