Our vaccination programme enters exciting new times

4 September 2021

This week the Department once again managed to administer more than 200 000 vaccines to the citizens of the Western Cape. We also opened the very first drive-through vaccination site in the province at the Athlone Stadium and already saw it contribute 619 vaccinations done, contributing to 1355 vaccinations being administered as a whole at the Athlone site. This is indicative of people making use of this unique opportunity.

Previously when it rained, we saw lower turnout at our vaccination sites, but it was evident at the drive-through that people want to be vaccinated. They could stay in their car while being vaccinated and not feel a drop of rain. At 1pm there were already more than 400 people vaccinated!

In addition to the drive-through, the Department also partnered with the University of the Western Cape to open the UCT Community of Hope Vaccine Site, which will go a long way in supporting students, who typically form part of the 18–34-year-old age group, in getting vaccinated in a safe and convenient setting.

216 961 vaccinations were administered for the week 30 August – 3 September:

  • Monday = 40 963
  • Tuesday = 43 006
  • Wednesday = 43 057
  • Thursday = 43 150
  • Friday = 46 785

Overall vaccination performance (as at 2 September August)

  • 819,873 vaccinations have been administered to those over the age of 60 year. Of which, 389,439 have already been fully vaccinated;
  • 473,220 in the 50-59 age bracket been vaccinated. Of which, 211,021 have already been fully vaccinated;
  • 544,150 in the 35-49 age bracket have been vaccinated. Of which, 202,951have already been fully vaccinated, and

We thank everyone who has come forward for vaccination already and ask them to further support us by being vaccine ambassadors. Those who will be going for vaccination, if you know of someone who has not yet been vaccinated, bring them with!
