Minister Mbombo Opens New Mfuleni Temporary Community Day Centre

29 July 2016

The new Mfuleni Temporary Community Day Centre is a model of sustainable design for temporary buildings.

The temporary CDC includes 63 shipping containers converted for use as consulting rooms and for other clinical and support functions. The facility boasts a fully fitted dental surgery, a pharmacy, as well as specialist treatment areas for acute conditions and for woman and child health care. Half of the containers come from the Du Noon temporary CDC, where the Department first applied this innovative temporary solution.

The establishment of the temporary Mfuleni Community Day Centre will alleviate service pressures staff and management, and improve patient experience. The existing clinic had been experiencing high volumes of patients and space constraints.

Western Cape Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo officially opened the temporary Mfuleni CDC today.

“This facility is set to make a substantial difference to the level of care we provide to the community within the area. Patients requiring rehabilitation services will now receive their services at Mfuleni CDC instead of having to travel to Eerste River Hospital.” Said Minister Mbombo.

“The increased consultation rooms will facilitate the down referral of pediatric patients on ART, who are currently also receiving these services at Eerste River Hospital. Audiology and Speech therapy services will be provided on site,” added the Minister.

The Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town collaborated on the design and implementation of the project so that it meets a number of shared goals. The new facility is expected to be a catalyst for broader municipal upgrading plans for the immediate area.

The construction of the interim facility, as well as the planned community health centre, is in line with the WCG Health strategy of improving infrastructure. It is envisaged that the provision of the full package of care will lead to greater client satisfaction.
