Official Opening of Nomzamo Community Day Centre

Statement by Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape Minister of Health

This morning, the Western Cape Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo officially opened the Nomzamo Community Day Centre. 

The new R19 million facility comes as a response to the growing health needs of the communities of Nomzamo, Asanda, Lwandle, and Strand. 

Previously in Nomzamo, the City of Cape Town-run Ikhwezi Clinic, only offered a limited package of services and was the only CDC in the area. Subsequently, it could not cope with the rapidly increasing population and burden of disease.  This new facility will contribute greatly to the strengthening of primary healthcare in the area. 

“The Western Cape Government has heard the needs of the people of Nomzamo, we have now delivered and pledge to continue doing so. I now entrust the facility to the community. This is their facility and not the Department’s. I urge the community, through their representatives, to look after the facility and participate in its governance by joining the facility’s clinic committee when nominations open,” said the Western Cape Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo.  

Ms Ncebakazi Ndlebe, one of the first patients to be treated at Nomzamo CDC, says she feels very special whenever she goes to Nomzamo CDC. “From the security guards up to the staff members inside the clinic, they work so well together,” said Ndlebe.

“They have so much care for their patients. They always go an extra mile to meet our needs,” she added. 

Services offered at Nomzamo Community Day Centre include: 

• All curative, promoted, preventative and rehabilitative Primary Health Care services;
• Woman’s Health services (including ante-natal and post-natal care);
• Child Health;
• TB, HIV/AIDS STI interventions;
• Mental Health services; 
• Dietetics;
• Rehabilitation;
• Outreach Audiology & Speech services; 
• Occupational Therapy & Physiotherapy; and
• Pharmaceutical services (including Chronic Medicine collection).

Primary clinical facilities at Nomzamo will also include:

• Chronic & Acute treatment area facilities;
• Specialists rooms for the treatment of acute conditions;
• Specialist rooms for wound care;
• Consultation rooms;
• Counselling rooms;
• An infectious disease unit;
• Dedicated Direct Observation Treatment (DOTS) room;
• Prep room;
• Associated consulting and counselling spaces;
• A large multi-purpose room for education, training and physical therapy sessions;
• A full pharmacy; and
• A purpose designed Women and Child Health Unit.

Infrastructure development remains an integral component to our patient-centred approach to healthcare. As the Western Cape government we will continue to improve our health infrastructure, giving greater access to healthcare for our people and ensuring that healthcare workers operate in a safe and conducive environment for patient-centred care.
