Update on Ashton-Montagu road project

16 March 2018

A plan is in place to make up for lost time on a Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) contract to rehabilitate and upgrade various sections of the R60 and R62 between Ashton and Montagu through Cogmanskloof. Work on this R583 million contract is expected to be complete early in 2019.

Ashton update

At the western end of Ashton, construction is complete on Main Road between Ashton Cellars and Middle Street. Work is under way on the northern lanes between Middle Street and Bruwer Street. At the eastern end, a portion of the south side lanes is complete, and work on the northern lanes is under way. Two-way traffic is being maintained through Ashton.

Cogmanskloof update

In Cogmanskloof, Phase C6 works started early this year. Some rock blasting will be required in this phase, so please keep an eye on the blasting schedule. When the road is open, stop-go controls manage one-way traffic along this section. Motorists should expect waiting times of up to 20 minutes.

Roadworks on Phases C3 and C4 are almost complete. Finishing work along the edges, as well as the construction of stormwater drains, is under way. Construction on Phases C7 and C8 is almost complete. Finishing work along the edges, as well as the construction of stormwater drains and stone walls, is in progress.

A stop-go control is in place in Phase C7/C8 to facilitate the construction of stone walls. This section includes a portion of road into Montagu around Voortrekker Bridge to enable work on the bridge to be completed.

Montagu update

Road construction in Montagu is almost complete and two-way traffic has been restored along the length of Long Street. The installation of kerbs and construction of sidewalks is under way. Some of the last work in Montagu will be laying the final asphalt layer along the central part of Long Street, as well as restoring access to this road from several side streets. The construction of the western portion of Van Riebeeck Street will commence later this year.

DTPW is aware that delays are frustrating, but some inconvenience during construction is inevitable. Motorists will soon be able to enjoy a safer and more pleasant travelling experience on this road.

The high-quality road infrastructure that DTPW provides is an important component of a safe and effective transport system, and an enabler of economic and social development in the Western Cape.
