Twenty-eight (28) people die on Western Cape roads, 64% of them pedestrians

Weekly road safety report: 28 February to 6 March 2018

Forensic Pathology Services data indicates 28 people were killed between 28 February to 6 March on Western Cape roads. Sixty-four percent of these fatalities were pedestrians (18), and four were passengers.

“We are concerned at the number of pedestrians who were killed this week. This is in spite of the ongoing road safety education activities of our Directorate: Road Safety Management in schools and in communities,” said Farrel Payne, Director: Provincial Traffic Law Enforcement. “We strongly encourage pedestrians to wear visible clothing at night, and drivers to take extra care wherever pedestrians walk on and near our roads”, he added.

Thursday 1 March

• 1 driver was killed in the Winelands Region.

Friday 2 March

• 1 pedestrian was knocked down and killed in the Eden/ Central Karoo Region.
• 2 pedestrians were knocked down and killed in the Metro Region.
• 1 passenger was killed in the Overberg Region.

Saturday 3 March

• 1 driver was killed in the Metro Region.
• 1 passenger was killed in the Metro Region.
• 4 pedestrians were killed in the Metro Region.
• 1 driver was killed in the West Coast Region.
• 1 driver was killed in the Winelands Region.
• 1 pedestrian was knocked down and killed in the Winelands Region.

Sunday 4 March

• 1 passenger was killed in the Eden/ Central Karoo Region.
• 1 pedestrian was knocked down and killed in the Eden/ Central Karoo Region.
• 1 driver was killed in the Metro Region.
• 1 passenger was killed in the Metro Region.
• 4 pedestrians were knocked down and killed in the Metro Region.
• 1 motorcyclist was killed in the Metro Region.
• 1 pedestrian was knocked down and killed in the West Coast Region.

Monday 5 March

• 1 pedestrian was knocked down and killed in the Metro Region.
• 3 pedestrians were knocked down and killed in the Winelands/ Overberg Region.

Additional statistics for the week of 28 February to 7 March

• Provincial Traffic Services held 33 alcohol blitz roadblocks and Random Breath Testing operations.
• A total of 7 643 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol, and 57 were arrested.
• The highest breath alcohol reading recorded was 1,49 mg/ 1 000 ml of breath in the George service area – over 6 times the legal limit of 0,24 mg/ 1 000 ml.
• A total of 3 136 fines in the amount of R4 698 600 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver violations to vehicle fitness offences.
• Provincial Traffic Services recorded 762 speeding offences. The highest speeds recorded were:
  • 164 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 158 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Mossel Bay service area.
  • 125 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N7 in the Vredenburg service area.
  • 108 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on the N2 in the Worcester service area.
  • 109 km/h in a 60 km/h zone in the Somerset West service area.
• Provincial Traffic Services made 12 other arrests:
  • 1 driver was arrested for excessive speeding – for travelling 164km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Beaufort West service area.
  • 1 driver was arrested for excessive speeding – for travelling 158km/h in 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Mossel Bay service area.
  • 1 driver was arrested for excessive speeding – for travelling 147 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Swellendam service area.
  • 1 driver was arrested for excessive speeding – for travelling 125 km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R45/Hopefield in the Vredenburg service area.
  • 1 driver was arrested for excessive speeding – for travelling 113 km/h in an 80km/h zone – as well as for reckless and negligent driving on the N2 in the George service area.
  • 1 driver was arrested for false documentation in the Laingsburg service area.
  • 1 driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving, bribery, resisting arrest, assault and not having a driver’s licence in the Worcester service area.
  • 1 driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and was charged with reckless and negligent driving in the Caledon service area.
  • 2 drivers were arrested for goods overloading – 1 on the N2 in the Somerset West service area, and 1 on the N1 in the Worcester service area.
  • 1 driver was arrested for false documentation in the Mossel Bay service area.
  • 1 driver was arrested for defeating ends of justice, crimen injuria, assault and resisting arrest in the Swellendam service area.
