Western Cape Law Firm Wins Top Intellectual Property Award

24 April 2013

The Western Cape Government congratulates the province-based firm, Von Seidels Intellectual Property Attorneys on winning the South African IP Firm of the Year award.

Minister Alan Winde commended the company, which has established itself as one of the leading IP firms on the continent, helping to position the province as the gateway to Africa for firms requiring specialist IP services.

The firm won the accolade at a ceremony in London earlier this month.

“Von Seidels is the first Western Cape firm to have won this award and we are thrilled that the company has received international recognition. It’s a win for the province’s entire IP sector. It’s also one of just two firms to ever have received this honour. Intellectual Property is one of South Africa’s foremost strengths: in the 2012/13 World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report, the country was ranked among the top 20 for Intellectual Property Protection.

“The 2012/13 report also rated South Africa’s auditing and reporting standards as the strongest in the world and our corporate boards as the most efficient in the world,” said Minister Winde.

“In the Western Cape, we are utilising these strengths, in collaboration with other programmes such as our Red Tape to Red Carpet initiative, to actively attract higher levels of foreign investment. In the 2011/12 financial year, our trade and investment promotion agency Wesgro secured committed investment to the value of more than R1.2 billion. This boost to our economy will improve lives in the Western Cape by creating more employment opportunities for our residents.”
