Destination Fascinating South Africa Flag Off By Minister Ivan Meyer

15 March 2016

Quayside six (6) at V & A Waterfront was transformed into a hive of activity as classic car enthusiasts from as far afield as Belgium, Netherlands, France, Malaysia and England gathered for the start of the Destination Fascinating South Africa Belgium Classic Car Tour. Arranged by the Belgium Classic Car association, the tour will see these 28 ‘graceful old ladies” travelling a total of 2675 km through some of the most beautiful parts of the Western and Eastern Cape over the next twelve days.

Organizer, Stephaan Schutte, indicated that as classic car enthusiasts the tour offered them the opportunity to share their passion for cars while at the same time getting to know South Africa.  “Participating cars range from a 1956 Mercedes 190 SL, a 1957 MG Magnette, a 1959 Jaguar XK 150 DC, a 1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spyder to  a 1964 Austin Healey MK111. Each one lovingly restored and cared for by its owners”, said Schutte.

Officiating at the flag off ceremony, Western Cape Minister of Finance, Ivan Meyer, accompanied by his colleague, the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Donald Grant highlighted the historical ties between South Africa and countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands. He urged participants to not only travel safely, but also use the opportunity to experience our people and South African culture. Heritage and Cultural tourism plays a key role in building the tourism sector in the Western Cape. According to Meyer, tourism is a key focus sector for the Western Cape as ‘it has the potential to grow the economy and create jobs’ says Meyer.

The tour ends at Century City on Thursday 24 March 2016.
