Bursary holders excel in 2015 Matric Examination

Bursaries and cash prizes awarded two years ago to learners through the Western Cape Provincial Treasury and Nedbank Essay Writing Competition has been rewarded with an excellent set of results by those recipients who completed the 2015 National Senior Certificated (NSC).

The group of 13 learners achieved 75 distinctions in total, averaging six per learner.  Neritha Kluyts and Marina Smuts of Bloemhof Girls High as well as Shandre Jansen of George High School obtained 99% for Economics.  Shandre also obtained 99% for Business Studies while Schalk Marais of Paul Roos Gymnasium and Naushaad Maharaj  achieved 99% in English and Maths respectively. Jurie Zietsman of Point High School also returned an outstanding set of results scoring 98% in Maths, Economics and Accounting.

According to Mr Hary Malila, Deputy Director-General Fiscal and Economic Services at Provincial Treasury, the bursary which these learners received aims to promote enthusiasm2 for Economics, Mathematics, Accounting and career possibilities; develop knowledge and skills in Economics, Mathematics and Accounting;  develop problem-solving and analytical abilities; expose learners to research methodology and essay-writing skills;  provide learners with access and links to the world of work; raise awareness of socio-economic issues in SA; encourage and reward excellence; and develop future. A beaming Mr Malila expressed his satisfaction with the results. “Our investment in learners who intend obtaining a degree in Economics, Accounting, Commerce or Mathematics at a Western Cape university is bearing fruit” he said.

Finance Minister, Ivan Meyer, also expressed his delight saying that he was looking forward to personally congratulating the learners when he hosts them later this month in Cape Town.
