Inspired to lead

16 July 2015

Dr Ivan Meyer, Western Cape Minister of Finance, is a great man.

Born in Kuils River in South Africa, Dr Meyer went to school at Weston High School in Vredenburg and then he went to The University of Western Cape for a Bachelor of Arts degree. He also did his Masters and PHD in Public Administration at the Stellenbosch University.

Dr Meyer is currently the provincial Minister of Finance. In our interview Dr Meyer had great plans for the Western Cape. He is a man with passion for his work. He said: “I like to talk to people who say ‘we can’, but I also like to talk to people who say ‘we cannot’ so I can prove them wrong.”

Minister Meyer is truly a role model. He likes to write books and poems and recently wrote a poem that focuses on language empowerment. He says “if a bank does not give service in your language, take your money to another bank.” Dr Meyer encourages mother tongue education. In our interview Dr Meyer was great with the Nal’ibali children, he read a short story to them, as well as the poem he wrote. He inspired the children with stories about reaching for the stars. He told them that anything is possible if they believe in themselves, and also said education is the key.
