Liquor Authority Shuts Down Errant Establishments

The Western Cape Liquor Authority swooped in on errant liquor licence holders closing down two establishments.

In addition, harsh penalties were handed down to a further two outlets for selling alcohol outside of their trading hours.

Alan Winde, Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, said the Western Cape Liquor Authority had conducted several operations in the run-up to the festive season.

In December two establishments, the Florentine in Observatory and Die Bult in George, were closed for trading without a valid licence.

Minister Winde said in November the Liquor Authority fined a Stellenbosch establishment, Springbok Pub, R50 000 for exceeding trading hours.

Saldanha Liquors received a R40 000 fine for selling liquor to illegal shebeens.

“We are sending a clear message to licence holders, irresponsible trading will not be tolerated,” said Minister Winde.

As part of its pre-festive season operations, the Liquor Authority conducted joint inspections with police across in the province. 

This included blitzes in the Southern Cape, Robertson, Ashton, Bonnievale and Montagu.

Minister Winde said the Liquor Authority was also continuing province-wide forums with liquor licence holders and awareness drives for residents.

There are over 8 131 licence holders in the Western Cape.

“The Authority has hosted training programmes for all the licence holders to make sure they’re aware of the requirements of the new Liquor Act. In addition the Authority embarked on a campaign to promote responsible alcohol consumption. They are hosting sessions across the province focusing on educating residents about the dangers of alcohol abuse,” said Minister Winde.

Minister Winde commended the Liquor Authority for their efforts in bringing licenced establishments to book for breaking the law. Over the past few months three establishments in Woodstock, Elsies River and Mitchells Plain have lost their licences.
