Western Cape Farmers Donate to Northern Cape and North West Province

Gerrit van Rensburg, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development thanked Western Cape farmers for their generous response to donate animal feed for the drought stricken Northern Cape and North West provinces. Van Rensburg said team work between the Western Cape Government; Agri Western Cape, and Transnet, is making this initiate possible.
Van Rensburg said farmers have so far pledged more than 1000 tons of various animal feeds which will be transported to the affected provinces later this month. Van Rensburg thanked Transnet for making a train available to transport the donations free of charge in the last week of January.
Van Rensburg is urging Western Cape farmers to become involved in this initiative to help their colleagues in the North. “We have experienced good harvests for the past few seasons, and are in a position to help those in need”.
The train will collect donations at the following stations:
- Swellendam Station.
- Rietpoel Station in Caledon.
- Riversdal Station.
- Herold Station.
- Rust Station, between Malmesbury and Moorreesburg.
- Poels Station, between Piketberg and Citrusdal.
Agri Western Cape is coordinating the donations, and according to their figures, the following donations have so far been pledged:
- 114 tons of grain.
- 354 big pack bales, 350kg each.
- 2602 round bales, 280kg each.
- 3350 small bales, 20 kg each.
The bales consist of a combination of lusern; oats straw; wheat straw, and hay.
Cash donations have also been handed over to Agri Northern Cape (R20 000) and Agri North West (R20 000).
