FLISP in Western Cape ensures youth home ownership

27 August 2021

There was great joy today, when the Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Tertuis Simmers handed over 6 Financed Linked Individual Subsidy Programme (FLISP) homes to beneficiaries who recently acquired their properties in the Conifers/Malibu Village, Blue Downs area.

These homes form part of the 269 FLISP infill units that have been constructed in the area, targeting those households with an income between R 3 501 – R 15 000 within the Malibu Village area. The combined FLISP subsidy that was received by the 6 beneficiaries amounts to R 570 524. To date, 186 residents have already acquired properties in the area.

The FLISP programme is a housing subsidy for first-time home buyers to assist with purchasing a home. The subsidy is paid to your bank or financial institution and will reduce your monthly loan instalments, making it more affordable to buy a home.

Minister Simmers said: “I’d like to congratulate each recipient that moved into their homes today. To see the happiness on their faces brought me great joy. Through FLISP, we’ve been able to ensure that our residents at this young age can become legal homeowners. This demonstrates how the Western Cape Government is creating opportunities in the affordable housing market. Through enabling ownership, we are ensuring that our people are empowered.”

One of the couples that moved in today, Justin (30) and Sammy-Joe Williams (25) said: “We’re are tremendously grateful for FLISP, as not only has it helped us to acquire a property, but because there’s a reduction in the bond repayment, we can do a bit more with the extra cash on hand. We are excited about our home and cannot wait to fully settle in the area. We encourage others to also apply for FLISP as it makes a big difference.”

Another beneficiary, Belinda Brink (26) said: “Being a property owner at this age is a privilege and I thank God for this amazing blessing and opportunity. FLISP has helped me tremendously and it has placed me in a position where I can now comfortably pay my monthly bond. This is an exciting period in my life. Others should definitely apply for FLISP as it can help them as much as it helped me.”

Simmers added: “As the Western Cape Government, we remain committed to accelerating human settlement delivery, while promoting social inclusion through the development of integrated, safe, resilient and sustainable human settlements in an open opportunity society.”
