These sites, which are at various stages of implementation, form part of the Airport Precinct Infills Projects (APIP). The APIP is divided into five infills sites namely, Luyolo, Tambo Village, Gxagxa (erf 301 & 302), New Rest & Lusaka Infills, located in Gugulethu. The project involves of the construction of internal and bulk engineering services and 729 housing opportunities, consisting of 455 Breaking New Ground (BNG) and 274 high density units for qualifying and deserving beneficiaries.

These beneficiaries will be sourced from the Gugulethu backyarders, Manenberg backyarders, New Rest backyarders, Gxagxa and Lusaka Informal settlements areas. The project, which has a budget allocation of R 364 million commenced in September 2020 and is expected to be concluded by February 2025.

Minister Simmers said: “I’m looking forward to visiting this site and receiving an update. This is yet another development that is ensuring integration, as it will bring people together from different communities, backgrounds and creeds. This flagship project is very important, as it will make a significant difference of those living in informal settlements, as well as those living in backyards.

This project also demonstrates the Western Cape Department Government’s commitment in seeking to ensure that our people live in better and safer environments.”

In adhering to all COVID-19 health protocols, Minister Simmers will be accompanied by a small team, which will be inclusive of the Department’s senior executive officials.
