Minister Simmers to hold virtual meetings with Qolweni and Kurland, Plettenberg

28 June 2021

Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Tertuis Simmers says he will hold virtual meetings with the relevant stakeholders of the Qolweni Phase 3A 169 Housing project and the Kurland community members on Tuesday, 29 June 2021.

Following the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 27 June 2021 that South Africa’s been placed on adjusted alert level 4, due to the current third-wave of covid infections that is being experienced throughout the country, it’s been determined to keep face-to-face interaction to a bare minimum.

To this end, the planned site visit to where the Qolweni project in Plettenberg Bay is earmarked to be developed, has been postponed given the existing restrictions. Further events that are also postponed due this announcement includes the housing handover at Golden Valley in George, the sod turning in Melkhoutfontein and the title deed handover in Slangrivier, which are both located in the Hessequa municipal area. This is to ensure the safety of residents, as the virus continues to spread. We will look to reorganise these as soon as possible.

Minister Simmers said: “I’m looking forward to providing an update to the Qolweni stakeholders, as we’ve made significant progress. We’ve committed to accelerating this process, as we want to avoid further delays. The budget allocation of R 33, 5 million for construction and professional fees, which was approved in October 2019 is still applicable.

I want to assure all those waiting for their title deeds and housing opportunity that we remain committed to ensuring these handovers do become a reality. I will engage both the George and Hessequa Municipalities about these handovers and together we’ll ensure that the best way forward be found in this regard.

For now, I do believe that it is critical that we all play our part in combatting the spread of covid-19. We need to continue wearing our masks, washing, and sanitising our hands, keep a safe social distance of more than 1,5m, while also avoiding enclosed spaces.

As the Western Cape Government, we remain committed to the Qolweni project and the various handovers, as we want to ensure that the lives of our people are ultimately improved.”
