Media Alert: Minister Madikizela to Deliver Closing Remarks at 1 000 Trees Heritage Day Celebration

22 September 2011

Western Cape Human Settlements Minister, Bonginkosi Madikizela, will deliver the closing remarks at the Day of 1 000 Trees event in Mannenburg, Cape Town, on 24 September 2011. He will focus on the role of the environment in creating sustainable human settlements.

What is Day of 1 000 Trees?
1 000 trees - one day - one under-greened community. Greenpop's Day of 1 000 Trees will see community members from Mannenberg on the Cape Flats and volunteers coming together to plant 1 000 trees in one day to celebrate our country's natural heritage. With September being Arbor Month, Day of 1 000 Trees has already started spurring excitement among the community of Mannenberg, who will be the beneficiary of 1 000 trees. Trees will be planted in schools, the community sports ground, the local police station, community gardens and the Mannenberg waterfront. The project has recently been launched through Ramsay Media and individual tree givers are already buying trees for this day. Staff of sponsor companies would be invited as well.

Why 24 September?
South Africans celebrate Heritage Day on 24 September by remembering the heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of our country. Various events are staged throughout the country to commemorate this day. Day of 1 000 Trees will celebrate the natural heritage of South Africa and raise awareness about our environment.

Braai Day
Braai Day (24 September) is a celebration of South Africa's rich cultural heritage and its unique national pastime, the braai. It aims to unite all South Africans by encouraging them to partake in a fun and tangible activity shared by all demographic groups and religious denominations. After planting at Day of 1 000 Trees, we are planning to have a big braai (with sustainable meats) for all planters.

September is Arbor Month
September in South Africa is also Arbor month, a month of planting trees in order to preserve South Africa's natural heritage by increasing biodiversity and creating awareness. On 24 September, Greenpop, volunteers, sponsors and community members will be teaming up to plant 1 000 trees in Mannenberg, Cape Town.
