Speech Excerpts from Minister Madikizela's Address at Housing Handover in Lwandle

2 April 2012

The Provincial Minister for Human Settlements in the Western Cape, Bonginkosi Madikizela, delivered the keynote address at the handover of a specially designed house to wheelchair-bound Ms Angela Msizi, who is also the grandmother and caretaker of an 18-year-old man. Both Ms Msizi and her grandson will stay in the house.

Minister Madikizela said, "I want to acknowledge our partners Corobrik and Beares. Corobrik contributed the bricks and built the houses, and Beares contributed furniture, including couches, a TV, fridges and chairs. I really appreciate the willing spirit of all the partners to provide a home for Ms Msizi."

"When I was inside, I had a conversation with my colleagues, on whether we can continue to build houses like this. The answer is yes and no. There are hundreds of thousands of people waiting for houses in the Western Cape. Only if we have partnership and co-operation from the private sector and work better together with companies like Corobrik can we continue to provide such beautiful houses with excellent quality. I encourage all private companies to get involved wherever they can to help with the housing need in the Western Cape."

Minister Madikizela added, "I also want to thank the community members. They came to the government and asked if we could help Mrs Msizi. If it wasn't for them and their care for one of their community members, then I don't think this house would be here today. I want to encourage the spirit of Ubuntu I see in this community, that people will continue to look out for each other."

The house was built by Corobrik on land provided by the Department of Human Settlements. It is part of the 82-unit New Siyazama PHP housing project and furnished by Beares. The house represents the government and private business working better together in a partnership to provide housing solutions for people who really need them, as well as ensuring the accelerated delivery of houses.
