Minister Madikizela To Embark on Affordable Housing Roadshow Across The Western

4 September 2017

During the month of September, Western Cape Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela will embark on an Affordable Housing roadshow across the province where he will participate in workshops targeted at the GAP market.

The Affordable Roadshow is an initiative by the Department of Human Settlements to inform the public of the programmes available for people seeking access to affordable housing.  It will do this by highlighting the following:

  • Planning for Affordable Housing projects in various municipalities.
  • The growth in the need for affordable housing by municipality and the province as a whole
  • Assistance available for people wishing to purchase a home. This refers to the Finance Linked Institutional Subsidy Programme (FLISP). It provides a once-off down payment to households who have secured mortgage finance to acquire ownership of a residential property for the first time.  By reducing the initial mortgage loan amount, the monthly repayment instalments become more affordable. It is available to people earning between R3 500 and R 15 000. It can be used to purchase any residential property or previously subsidised housing stock as well as to build as house on a serviced stand (by NHBRC approved builders).
  • Social Housing.  This is a rental option, currently available to people earning between R1 500 and R 7 500 per month. It provides for secure long-term rental in properties owned and managed by Social Housing Institutions. These institutions are not government entities and are independently managed. Social Housing is delivered in designated Restructuring Zones which allows for highly favourable rental rates.

The  Minister will visit  the Drakenstein, Breede Valley, Hessequa, Mossel Bay, Overstrand, Matzikama, Cederberg and Bergrivier Municipalities during the first leg of the roadshow.
