Residents of Rooidakke In Grabouw Receive Houses

6 April 2017

Western Cape Human Settlements Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela this week handed over houses to residents of Rooidakke in Grabouw. He was joined by the Deputy Mayor of Theewaterskloof Municipality, Isaac Sileku.

The Rooidakke Housing Project was specifically aimed at assisting residents of Grabouw who live in informal settlements, farms and backyard dwellers.

Mrs Magrieta Dyk, a beneficiary, was ecstatic to receive a home. “I am so happy, I have waited 18 years for a house and now it has finally happened.”

Mrs Christine Smith (66), who has been living in a caravan in a backyard, was also overjoyed to receive a house.

Minister Madikizela, congratulated all the beneficiaries and reiterated the importance of prioritizing the elderly and vulnerable citizens.  “We must prioritize the most vulnerable beneficiaries in the allocation of free subsidised state houses.  We must continue to shift more resources towards the upgrading of informal settlements in order to provide basic services to all our citizens. And we must strengthen our partnership with the private sector to increase affordable houses for people earning above the free-subsidy threshold.”

The housing project forms part of the Department’s Peoples Housing Process (PHP) programme and will comprise a total of 1169 units upon completion. To date, over 600 units have been delivered. In PHP programmes, the community plays an active role in the decisions and development of the project.
