Elderly Paarl Residents Become Proud Home Owners

13 March 2017

Residents broke out in celebration on Friday, 10 March 2017, when Western Cape Human Settlements Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela, along with Drakenstein Executive Mayor, Conrad Poole delivered title deeds to 64 Paarl beneficiaries. The Title Deeds were delivered to residents of the Department’s Drommedaris Housing Project.

Oldest beneficiary, 107-year-old Mr Seleku James Xontana was among recipients who received title deeds and took legal ownership of their homes. Mr Xontana said he feels blessed to receive his title deed. “I am very happy to be this age and now I own my property, thank you.”

Addressing the beneficiaries; Minister Madikizela expressed the importance of receiving a title deed. “This is a very important document. Receiving a title deed gives people a sense of pride and joy, knowing they are officially owners of the property they live in.”

The award winning Drommedaris Housing Project is a mixed development consisting of Breaking New Ground (BNG) units; semi-detached, double-storey and free standing units.

The Department delivered a total of 1567 houses in this project, which forms part of government’s Enhanced Peoples Housing Process (EPHP) programme. The total project costs amounted to more than R130 million. In this housing support programme (EPHP), residents get actively involved and contribute to the building of their homes.

Friday’s handover was one of the Department’s strategic focus areas to ensure that the most vulnerable residents are prioritised with housing opportunities.
