Minister Madikizela to Welcome Beneficiaries in Thembelihle, Pelican Park, Cape

Western Cape Human Settlements Minister, Mr Bonginkosi Madikizela will on Tuesday 7 June 2016 hold an official housing handover ceremony for the beneficiaries of the Thembelihle housing project in Pelican Park, Cape Town.

The project beneficiaries consist of domestic workers, families that were relocated from Thabo Mbeki Informal Settlement and other areas and also the elderly and special needs families. The list of recipients includes 79-year-old Mrs Jongiwe Madebeza Mavango.

The project reflects the Department’s vision of social integration, in which beneficiaries drawn from different interest groups and areas are provided housing opportunities together. In addition, the project also reflects the Department’s strategic focus on ensuring that the most vulnerable beneficiaries, such as the elderly and those with special needs, are prioritized.

The Thembelihle Housing Project is an Integrated Residential Development Project (IRDP) which when complete will consist of 2024 Breaking New Ground (BNG) free houses and 725 Gap (bonded) houses, in which beneficiaries will pay for a portion of the home cost. Construction of the BNG houses on site began in April 2013 and was completed in March 2015 at a cost of R47.7 million, and of the 2024 BNG units, 2019 have been handed over.

When complete, the project will also include 2 schools, a clinic, church sites and a shopping centre. The total cost of the completed project will be an estimated R147 million.
