MEC Patricia De Lille to Receive Memorandum on Domestic Violence from 900 Children at FAMSA March Tomorrow Morning

8 December 2010

Social Development Minister Patricia de Lille will tomorrow morning march with FAMSA and 900 grade 6 and 7 girls and boys from Keizergracht to Parliament.

At Parliament the Minister will symbolically receive a memorandum on domestic violence from the children.

The children are from schools in Khayelitsha, Mitchell's Plain, Gugulethu, Dunoon, Joe Slovo, Kensington and Factreton and, according to a FAMSA press release, "have all taken part in FAMSA's Male/Female Identity Workshops.

"Many children in Western Cape communities are growing up in families where violence is the norm. Since gender-based violence is a learnt behaviour, children learn that the only way to resolve their problems is to resort to violence," continues the FAMSA release.

Minister De Lille is going to attend 'because it is going to be an incredible experience to be in the company of 900 children that are as serious as I am about bringing an end to the cycle of violence.'
