Minister congratulates 207 graduates of 18 ALPHA from Chrysalis Academy

30 July 2018

The Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz, addressed the graduation ceremony of 207 young men from 18 ALPHA at Chrysalis Academy.

The young men are from all over the province, and more specifically are from some of the most troubled communities affected by social ills such as drugs, crime and gangsterism. Some of these young men were themselves in conflict with the law.

Their participation in the Chrysalis Academy saw them undergo an intense 3 month training and development programme, which focusses on instilling discipline, hard and soft skills, a focus on keeping their minds and body fit, and preparing them for leaving the Academy and entering the world of work.

In his address, Minister Fritz emphasized the importance of parents playing an ongoing supportive role in the development of the graduates, and spoke of the crucial role strong families play.

“Nothing can compare to the value a responsible and committed parent plays in the household, and I congratulate the parents here today for walking on this journey with your children”, said Fritz.

Each of the 18 ALPHA graduates will now begin a 12-month internship, funded by the Western Cape Government through the EPWP. This will assist the graduates to gain some new skills and work experience. The internships will be based at various private sector, government and NGO organizations.

The Western Cape Government congratulates the young men and graduates from 18 ALPHA, and congratulates the management of the Chrysalis Academy, under the leadership of Dr. Lucille Meyer.
