UWC workshop on tackling youth networks of gang violence opened by Min Fritz

The Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz, addressed delegates at the start of a 3 day workshop under the theme, “Promoting Inclusiveness in Addressing Youth Networks of Gang Violence in South Africa”, at the University of the Western Cape.

The delegates are experts and academics from universities, NGOs and development agencies in the field of gangs, violence and youth development.

Minister Fritz opened the workshop with a presentation discussing some of the Western Cape Governments programmes and interventions aimed at creating safe spaces for youth at risk and opportunity for young people.

Our efforts as government are guided by the Provincial Youth Development Strategy and the Provincial Strategic Goals, specifically PSG 2 which calls on us to improve education outcomes and opportunities for youth development.

“My Department has allocated R651-million for services to children and youth, and an additional R15.6-million is allocated exclusively to the youth programme”, said Minister Fritz. This budget provides for a growing network of 7 Youth Cafés across the province, Child & Youth Care Centres, and other opportunities for young people to access safe spaces that try keep them away from gangs and violence.

Other initiatives within the Western Cape Government include the After Schools and Apprenticeships Game Changers, internships and the Chrysalis Academy.

Minister Fritz wished delegates well for the duration of the workshop.
