16 Days of Activism: Over R630 million in DSD support for women and children

25 November 2015

As we commemorate the beginning of the national 16 Days of Activism against Violence on Women and Children, the Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) is proud to be leading the whole-of-society response to the abuse of women and children.

The protection of women and children is more than just a 16 day event, and DSD is proud to lead the charge, providing key services 365 days a year. The department has prioritized the development and protection of the province’s 1.7-million children and 2.1-million women.

The Children and Families programme and the Victim Empowerment sub-programme (VEP) receive a combined budget of R630.7-million, which is the second largest funding allocation.

Our budget has allowed the department to initiate truly innovative and exciting programmes and projects, such as the newly launched R3.2-million Khuseleka One Stop Centre in Mannenberg. The Khuseleka One Stop Centre, provides a 24-hour “place of refuge” for victims of crime, and includes our partners;

  • the South African Police Services,
  • the Hawks,
  • the National Prosecuting Authority,
  • SASSA,
  • Business Against Crime,
  • the Western Cape Departments of Community Safety and Education,
  • and the National Departments of Justice, Correctional Services, and Home Affairs.

During this year’s 16 Days of Activism campaign, DSD will mobilize the inter-sectoral VEP Forum and partner with our funded NGO’s and other Departments during this period to actively reach out to vulnerable communities.

We can end the abuse of women and children if we continue to work together and build partnerships with communities. The public can report any cases of abuse of women and children by approaching our social workers at regional or local offices, or by contacting the DSD hotline on 0800 220 250.
