Prizes up for Grabs for Enthusiastic Participants

12 April 2013

The Western Cape Government is taking a healthy approach towards people in the Cape Town community by encouraging them, through weekly public aerobic sessions, to aim to make sport a regular part of their life.

This Friday morning initiative is being hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, with the support of the City of Cape Town, in the Company’s Gardens. The aim of this initiative is to promote a physically fit Cape Town; the impact of which will eventually be felt across the Western Cape.

The session held on Friday, 12 April 2013, showed that regular exercise forms a cornerstone of healthy living while it offers many benefits for both mental and physical health. Through continuous rhythmic activity to music, participants enjoyed a “fun in the sun” experience to start their working day.

Ms Semone Viljoen, a student at the University of Cape Town, attended her first session today after hearing about this inspiring fitness initiative on campus. “Having experienced a fun-filled session today, I’m thrilled by what the department is trying to create here. Not only does it bring people together, it is also positive to see that while exercising, you make new friends. And now I feel ready for my lectures today,” said a refreshed Viljoen.

Men also showed their support at today’s session. Mr Zainnoedien Brown of the Department of Transport and Public Works, who exercises on a regular basis, was happy to have started his day in this fashion. “I would encourage other men to also join this initiative, as exercise leads to fewer bouts of depression, releases stress and is relaxing,” said Brown. The most enthusiastic participants at the session received a prize.

The Department believes that aerobic exercise is a vital component of a healthy life, and even participating in a small amount can be beneficial. Members of the public are encouraged to attend the penultimate aerobics session in the Company’s Garden in front of Iziko Museum from 8:30 to 9:00 on Friday, 19 April 2013.
