Strengthening Ties with Corporate Sponsors

18 March 2013

Corporate social investment in sport changes people’s lives for the better. This was the key message from Dr Ivan Meyer, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, at a sponsors’ dinner held in Cape Town on Wednesday, 13 March 2013.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) is committed to strengthening existing strategic partnerships with corporations and media organisations, and to establishing new ones. Dr Meyer thanked sponsors already contributing to the promotion and development of sport in the Western Cape. “As you make a corporate investment, you ignite social and spiritual intelligence, and contribute to what our department envisages – an active, creative and social inclusive province”, he said.

The Minister appealed to potential sponsors to focus on women this year. “We hope to partner with you on investments in netball, judo, karate, kickboxing, hockey and other sports often played by women. In doing this, we will be taking confident steps to reduce crime which, as we have seen lately, is tearing communities apart.” He is expected to make an important announcement about support for netball in his upcoming Budget Speech.

Dr Meyer said it is important to promote healthy lifestyles in the province. DCAS is currently running public aerobics sessions on Friday mornings in the Company’s Garden to promote activity and fitness in the workplace. There are plans to roll out this initiative to train stations across the Western Cape this year.

A media representative at the dinner, Mr JP Naude, lauded the Department’s involvement with corporate entities to enhance sport outreach and uplift communities. “Partnerships in sport help to instil pride and hope in communities, and help the Western Cape to become a winning province”, he said.
