Positive Expectations at Provincial Youth Camp

2 October 2012

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and their partners present programmes with a positive impact at the Provincial Youth Camp.

The camp at the Steinthal Estate in Tulbagh is being attended by 275 youths from 29 September to 6 October 2012. A Legacy Outreach programme, as well as various sport, recreational and adventure activities, fitness programmes and talent shows, are scheduled for this week.

After attending separate regional camps in Villiersdorp and Tulbagh respectively, most participants realised how important these camps are. Gerald Visagie (15), a student with disabilities from Vredendal, says that the camps are essential, as it brings him closer to youths from diverse communities. “I didn’t know many people when I came here. Now I have many friends from whom I can learn so much,” he said.

Many participants believe that this week-long camp will be a valuable experience. Michael Selebano (20) from Langa came to the camp to become a better person by getting involved in the activities on offer. “I’m very excited and I look forward to interact with persons that live in other regions, to work together in teams with them and also to learn from them,” he said.

The department is confident that the activities will indeed impact on many lives. Youth Camp coordinator, Mr Ronald Gabriel, urges the youths to make the most of this opportunity by enhancing their values, soft skills and knowledge. He added that the camp is about social cohesion, ie youths from different communities “coming together”.
