Better Together in Cape Town Marathon

25 September 2012

Western Province Athletics, the City of Cape Town and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport formed a partnership that brought together thousands of runners in the Cape Town Marathon on Sunday, 23 September 2012.

Altogether there were 4 524 entries, with 2 018 competing in the 42.2 km event and 2 506 in the 10 km event. Despite the cold and rainy weather, these runners and the spectators enjoyed the rich natural and cultural heritage that Cape Town offers. The Cape Town Marathon serves as a qualifier for the 2013 Comrades Marathon and the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.

The department pays tribute to all the runners, spectators and officials that contributed to the overall success of the event. Ms Sue Forge of Western Cape Athletics said that the Cape Town Marathon was well attended and that nobody suffered serious injuries.

The department and its partners ensured that the athletes were able to enjoy Cape Town’s cultural warmth.
