MOD Programme Brings Change to Lavender Hill

A variety of sport and recreation activities brought together learners from primary and high schools across Cape Town at the Lavender Hill High School on Saturday, 18 August 2012.

The aim of this Women's Month celebration was to bring learners from diverse communities together to showcase their talents. Nine schools from Lavender Hill, Delft, Khayelitsha, Grassy Park and Hout Bay participated in the various activities on offer. Outdoor stage plays provided an opportunity for learners to display their dramatic skills and entertain the audience. On the sports field, learners played netball, softball, touch rugby and five-a-side soccer.

This event helped to show the difference that the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport's MOD (Mass participation, Opportunity and access, Development and growth) programme is making in the lives of Cape Town learners.

Mr Philasande Macwili of the Sport Development directorate said the MOD programme plays an important role in communities where the youth are constantly exposed to gang violence and drug and alcohol abuse. "The department is working hard to ensure that skills development happens at an early age, and this initiative has been playing an active role here," he said. Mr Macwili told the learners that the day was intended to give MOD coaches a clear indication of where they need to improve.

The City of Cape Town and the South African Police Service helped to make the day a success by providing emergency services and security. These learners had a joyful experience of working better together through Western Cape Government's MOD programme.
