Learners to Gain from Creative Writing Workshops

23 August 2012

The introduction of creative writing workshops in MOD (Mass participation, Opportunity and access, Development and growth) Centres will create opportunities for learners in Lavender Hill and Khayelitsha schools to shine.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport will run three creative writing workshops from 14:00 to 17:00 at the Lavender Hill High School (22–24 August 2012), Hillwood Primary School (28–30 August 2012) and KwaMfundo High School (4–6 September 2012). Each of these schools participates in the MOD programme in its area.

The aim of this initiative is to improve writing skills, encourage youth to share creative ideas, develop skills in range of types of writing and identify talent for further development.

Mr Ayanda Tobi of the Arts and Culture directorate says that the workshops aim to improve the presence of arts and culture in the MOD Centres which currently focus on sport and recreation activities.

He believes that the workshops will play a pivotal role in the improvement of the learner’s learning skills. “This has the power to promote social inclusion and imbue learners with a sense of expression and creativity,” said Tobi.

The MOD programme is playing an important role in developing communities by providing learning opportunities for youth. The department is confident that these workshops initiative can help ensure that youth are engaged in productive and creative activities for a better future.
