Annual Archives Week looks at digital era of record-keeping

The Western Cape Government will celebrate National Archives Awareness week from 5-9 June 2023, with various workshops being hosted at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s and Records Management Service.
 
The theme for this year’s week is: “Leave no-one behind: Archives in the era of Artificial Intelligence.” The Archives will also be exploring different conversations around the digitization of archival records. Online workshops on digitization and the recording and safeguarding of Oral Histories will also be held. Members of the public can also take behind-the-scenes tours of the archives to see what is housed in the building in Roeland street.
 
The Western Cape Archives holds various records, including marriage and death certificates, land ownership details and many photographs. Members of the public may visit the reading room to access these records for research and genealogy purposes.
 
The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais and Head of Department Guy Redman will officially open the week at the launch event.
 
Members of the media are invited to attend the launch event for Archives week, as well as visit the Archives during this time.

Archives Awareness Week runs from 5-9 June 2023. Behind-the-scenes tours run on the hour from 09:00 – 14:00 daily.
