On Wednesday, 10 May 2023, Minister Anroux Marais handed over funding to sporting federations in the Cape Winelands district to support them in their work for the year.
This funding handover is part of the annual cycle of transfer of funds to sporting federations across the province to assist them with their administration, development work and growing their various sporting codes in the province. Funding was handed over to 28 federations in the Cape Winelands district.
Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director: Sport and Recreation, encouraged the sport council and the federations receiving funding to build on the work they have done and to grow major sporting events in the area, as they also play an important role in bringing tourism and economic boosts.
Minister Marais thanked the federations for the work they are doing and encouraged to keep growing sport in their communities: “We have seen the impact that participation in sport makes, especially on our youth. Where sport is actively being played, our young people are kept positively engaged and we see a decrease in criminal activity. We want to continue using sport as a tool for creating safe communities, where our young people can live healthy lifestyles and make good choices.”
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport continues to support our sporting federations to ensure they can continue developing and promoting sport across the province. This was the fifth cheque handover in the past few weeks as federations in the Metro, Eden, Central Karoo and West Coast districts have completed their events. The last handover event will take place in the Overberg district later this month.
