We welcome the full return of the Two Oceans Marathon

13 April 2023

Joint media release by Minister Anroux Marais and Minister Mireille Wenger: We welcome the full return of the Two Oceans marathon events this weekend

The Western Cape Government is excited to see the full return of the Two Oceans Ultra and Half Marathon events, which will take place in Cape Town on Saturday, 15 April and Sunday, 16 April 2023 respectively.

This event is one of the most prestigious road running events in Africa, with its picturesque setting which draws runners from all over the world. We are excited to see the event return in full following the Covid-19 pandemic and associated regulations. The marathon contributes up to R672 million to the local and provincial economy annually.

We have seen the importance of major sporting events such as these in bringing an economic boost to our province through job creation, investment and tourism. We have also seen the importance of major events in promoting healthy and active lifestyles, and in bringing people together in supporting those participating.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais said: “We are so excited to once again host this marathon event in our province. The Western Cape is growing fast as the preferred destination for hosting major sporting and cultural events, as we have world-class facilities and organizational structures in place to ensure that events run smoothly. The province’s natural beauty also brings unique routes and other elements that remain a drawcard for participants and spectators to keep returning year after year. This remains a bumper year with many major events taking place and we can proudly say that the province is more than ready to host these and more. I wish the athletes all the best for their race and welcome their supporters who will ensure that every athlete feels supported and motivated to finish the race.”

Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger said: “Events like the Two Oceans Marathon attract many visitors to our province, supporting the economy and creating opportunities for our residents. The benefits go beyond a once off impressive economic boost of R672 million and provides a global platform to showcase the stunning City of Cape Town. I wish all runners the best of luck and the strength they need to get over the finish line and hope that once completed, that they get out and about to see all the wonderful offerings we have beyond the city.”

The Western Cape Government will continue to support and promote these major events as we continue to entrench the province as the sporting and cultural hub of the country.
