Future of women’s sport looks bright as we host the opening match of World Cup

10 February 2023

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is proud to be supporting the hosting of the T20 Women’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa this year. We look forward to seeing large crowds supporting the matches played at Newlands and Boland Park in Paarl. Both the opening match and the final will be played at the world-class Newlands Cricket ground. The provincial department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has provided financial support to ensure that the province will deliver this world-class event.

This tournament is one of many major sporting events that will be hosted in the province this year. The Western Cape Government is committed to backing these events as they bring an economic boost to our shores, as well as bringing renewed hope and joy to people across the province as they come together to cheer for their favourite teams.

Minister Anroux Marais wished the Momentum Proteas well as they prepare to open their campaign for the cup in the first match against Sri Lanka at Newlands tonight. “It is a very exciting time for women’s sport in our country. Our female professional athletes are inspirational to girls across the province as they show that sport offers international platforms and opportunities for success. I know our Momentum Proteas, under the leadership of captain Sune Luus, will do us proud and we will be there in full support.” she said.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport continues to work to bring more of these international cultural and sporting events to the province, as we continue to build the Western Cape as the cultural and sporting hub of the country.
