Two gold medals for Team Western Cape at Indigenous Games Festival

29 September 2022

Athletes and teams from the Western Cape participated at the National Indigenous Games Festival, which was hosted in Kwa-Zulu Natal from 24-28 September 2022.

Minister Anroux Marais, Head of Department Guy Redman, Chief Director Lyndon Bouah and other senior managers from the department attended the festival to show their support to Team Western Cape as they competed with the other provinces in the various sporting codes.

Team Western Cape finished in fifth place overall, with 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. The team narrowly missed out on securing a third place finish, as one more gold medal would have placed them in the third spot.

Abigail de Boer (Diketo) won an individual gold medal, while the Jukskei men’s team secured the other gold for the team. The Kgati team achieved a silver, with Mzuvela Dayimani and Njabulo Maqikiqa both achieving bronze in IIntonga.

The department supported the Western Cape team in their preparation and participation in this event. The department is proud of our medal winners, but also of the team’s performance and we know that they will continue building on these successes in preparation for the next tournament.
