One year to go to the Netball World Cup

27 July 2022

The Western Cape Government is excited to mark the countdown of one year to go until we kick off the Netball World Cup 2023 in Cape Town. Starting on 28 July 2023, this tournament will bring the world’s best teams to Cape Town to compete for the Cup.

Over the past two years, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has been rolling out support across the province to ensure that we have world-class facilities ready. This support has included:

• A funding allocation of approximately R10 million to upgrade existing facilities, as well as building of new facilities.

• 50 new or upgraded facilities will be handed over in districts across the province by the start of the tournament.

• R210 000 committed through our Major Events unit to support netball events that took place in the province in the past year.

• Support to local structures through administration, training courses for coaches, coaching clinics for players and handing over of equipment to clubs.

• The development of an isiXhosa Netball rulebook.

In addition to this, R5 million has been set aside for dedicated fanparks and viewing centres across the province in 2023, which will enable communities to be able to follow the live action. Another R5 million has been set aside for 2022 for operational support. Six netball activations will also be rolled out in the province starting in August 2022 to ensure we build up the excitement to the tournament.

Minister Anroux Marais said: “We are very excited to welcome the teams, support staff and supporters to Cape Town next year. We are ready to host this event and we call on the Western Cape to join us in celebrating Netball Fridays and to get behind our SA team as we support them in winning the Cup!”

The department has worked hard to be able to leave a legacy after the end of the tournament, as communities will have new and upgraded facilities available for use to encourage all aspiring netball players to practice the sport.
