Minister Marais proud of Team WC's National School Sport Championship victory

18 July 2022

It is with great pleasure that we congratulate our athletes, coaches and support staff who competed at the National School Sport Winter Championship and ended with a historic gold overall finish.

This year, the tournament was hosted over two legs – the first in the Western Cape presented chess, volleyball and netball fixtures. The remainder of the codes were played in Gauteng, after which Team Western Cape emerged as the winners of the combined results from both legs.

The team was comprised of a total of 335 athletes, 27 managers, 31 coaches, 16 general management team members, 1 doctor and 8 physiotherapists.  They achieved 8 Gold, 7 Silver and 3 Bronze finishes on their journey to taking the overall position as winners of the championship.

Minister Anroux Marais said: “This is the first time that our provincial team has brought home the gold and we are so proud of each athlete and all the support staff who made this possible. This was the culmination of many hours of training and preparation and I know that winning this gold place was a dream come true for many.”

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport will continue their work in supporting the athletes and support staff who compete in these championships every year.
