DCAS-supported sport climbing event sees two qualify for Tokyo Olympics
South Africa’s best male and female climber are headed to Tokyo in 2021 after qualifying for Olympic Games at a Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport-supported event in Cape Town over the weekend.
Christopher Cosser and Erin Sterkenberg respectively claimed the male and female titles at the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Continental Climbing Championship, which was held in Paarden Eiland from Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 December 2020.
The tournament saw 16 male and eight female climbers compete, and competition was tough. As the event was an Olympic qualifier, climbing routes were set by IFSC chief route-setter Yann Genoux and his team.
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) supported the event by providing funding, and was represented at the event by Sport Promotion Officer, Dyllon van der Rheede. “It is fantastic for DCAS to be part of an Olympic Qualifier as the department continues to support multiple sport codes across the Western Cape,” he said.
The Tokyo Olympic Games were originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, but were postponed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and will now be held from Friday 23 July to Sunday 8 August 2021.
DCAS congratulates Cosser and Sterkenberg on their victory and qualification, and wishes both well over the next few months as they continue their preparations for Tokyo.
