Cape’s best junior sprint paddlers compete at DCAS-supported event

Some of the Western Cape’s best junior sprint paddlers received an experience boost over the weekend when they competed in the in the Kayak Sprint competition at the Paarl Canoe Club on Saturday, 14 November 2020.

The event was supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), and hosted by the Western Cape Canoe Union’s (WCCU) Cape Winelands District.

The competition has been hosted annually for the past eight years and is focused on developing young paddlers. DCAS made a financial contribution to the event to assist in the youth-development aims.

“The Department is proud to be a part of this event as the event aims at developing young athletes which will be the future of the sport. The development of our future athletes is vital in keeping the sport alive and increasing the number of participants in sport especially at a youth level,” said Dyllon van der Rheede, a Sport Promotion Officer at DCAS.

In total, 57 paddlers between the ages of 10 -18 years competed at the event.
