Minister Marais mourns with Bonteheuwel over the loss of beloved Flori Skrikker

14 September 2020

It is with great sadness that Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Sport heard of the passing of the legendary “Auntie Flori” Skrikker from Bonteheuwel over the weekend.

Flori, together with Koelsoem Kamalie, captured the hearts of many South Africans with their cooking show and cookbooks, which showcased their cooking of many traditional, well-loved dishes. Koelsoem also sadly passed away in April this year.

Minister Marais said, “When one thinks of Flori, you automatically also think of Koelsoem, as these two neighbours took all of us with them on their journey from their homes to various stages and screens across the country. They became synonymous with good food, warm welcomes and many entertaining moments. Most of all, they were always extremely authentic and kind to all of those they met”.

The Western Cape is certainly poorer with the loss of both of these great women. Flori will always be remembered as a true legend of Bonteheuwel and in the province.

We express our heartfelt condolences to Auntie Flori’s family, friends and all the fans she made over the last years. We know she has touched many hearts and brought inspiration to all those around her. Her recipes will still continue to bring a smile to many for years to come.
